Digging Dog Nursery

The gardening experts at Sunset magazine have just made it easier to achieve a picture-perfect front yard. This month, Sunset introduced a line of branded plants designed to thrive and shine in virtually every California garden.

The introduction was timed to coincide with the release of the ninth edition of Sunset's influential Western Garden Book. Sunset's Western Garden Collection features 29 landscaping superstars that combine drought tolerance, easy care, brilliant bloom and interesting foliage.

Each plant in the inaugural collection was chosen by Sunset editors in partnership with Berkeley horticulture expert Janet Sluis , seeking not only health and vigor but also some arrestingly beautiful feature. The collection offers a mix of bold, contrasting foliage and perennial flowering color - all on compact plants that won't overwhelm Westerners' urban and suburban lots. The one edible plant in the collection is the 'Chef's Choice' rosemary, bred to contain twice the essential oils of a standard rosemary and to keep to a manageable size.

The ' Silver Shadow ' astelia offers straplike leaves of a soft, silvery green, without the razor-sharp edges of its larger relatives. It's a stunning color and a perfect, compact plant.

But it's equally important for these plants to do well in a wide range of zones and gardens. I'm really excited; we've put together a bunch of really cool plants.

Sunset's collection is aimed primarily at California, though some of the plants will also do well in the Pacific Northwest, Sluis said. The company hopes to expand future collections to include other areas of the Western United States, and also plans to branch into perennial edibles such as citrus and berries.

Sunset has locked up exclusive distribution rights for some of the plants in this year's collection, and Sluis is working with breeders to strengthen that trend in future years.

Sunset's Western Garden Collection is on nursery shelves in all 89 Orchard Supply Hardware stores and 40 Lowe's in California, and the company hopes to expand into selected small chains and independent garden centers. Check sunsetwesterngardencollection. Visitors can also view the plants in Sunset's test garden at the magazine's headquarters at 80 Willow Road in Menlo Park. It is a large impressive Astelia with an architectural appearance and distinctive silvery arching foliage that is covered with a silky indumentum of white hairs. On mature specimens the pale yellowish-green star-shaped flowers are followed by berries that are at first greenish-yellow and maroon surrounded by remnant purple tepals before they ripen to a bright orange colour. Astelia chathamica is a robust-growing plant but usually needs extra winter protection in most locations in the UK. The simple expediency of a heavy-guage fleece covering is usually enough. In mild winters or in favoured southern locations this is often not necessary. It likes a rich moist yet well-drained acidic soil.

Here's hoping the roots don't turn black and stinky. I've been very tempted by the Astelias at my local nursery. It's one of those plants I'm not convinced will live through our rainy winter. I love the look of it though. Maybe in a container.
