Environmental Horticulture offers programs throughout the community to promote and educate citizens on practices to promote sustainable gardening and environmentally sound landscapes. Homeowners can submit insect samples for identification by bringing a live or dead insect sample well preserved to the Chesapeake Extension Office. Bring sample in a zip lock plastic bag. Master Gardener volunteers or Extension Agents will try to identify and make a recommendation if insect is a pest. If we are not able to identify, we will mail your insect sample to the Insect ID lab at Virginia Tech.

Students are prepared for a wide range of careers working with plants on any scale of gardens and landscapes: urban, suburban, and rural; residential, commercial, and agricultural. Student knowledge and hands-on skills are developed in the program in the following areas: general horticulture and gardening practice, plant identification and botany, pruning, soil management, pest management, plant propagation, greenhouse production, landscape construction, plant pathology, plant nutrition, floral design, landscape design, landscape graphics, computer aided drafting, site analysis and more.

Horticulture, landscape, and turf management involves selection, production, management, marketing, use, and research of ornamental crops shrubs, trees, flowers, and turf , edible crops herbs, vegetables, and fruits and turf grasses for the economic, nutritional, aesthetic and recreational well-being of society. The major provides education and training in basic and applied sciences, arts and humanities, communication, and business and economics to provide an understanding of the underlying principles in plant growth and development and use of new technologies, and the operation of a horticultural enterprise. In consultation with an academic adviser and mentor, students may individually focus their academic programs through required and elective courses to focus training in specialized areas such as production, greenhouse and floriculture sciences, turfgrass management, golf course management, nursery production and management, edible crop production, pest management, sales and support services, education and training, and horticultural consulting. An internship in the industry is required to gain practical, hands-on experience. Job opportunities for horticulturists include horticulture crop production and management, horticulture merchandising and business, consulting, inspection, research, teaching, Extension, communications, allied industries serving horticultural producers, journalism, and developing private business.
