What is a good fruit tree to plant in sd for a small yard?

I live in South Dakota. As we are in South Dakota, there is a winter and then there is a spring. The winter is in September/October and the spring is in April/May. I want a fruit tree that will grow from a seed in the spring to a good size in the summer. The size I am talking about is a little larger than a cherry. The trees that I can think of that are small in the winter and a size to grow big are plum, apricot and cherry. Is there anything else that might work for me? Any suggestions would be helpful.

ANSWER:

I would like to try a different answer. It could be a dwarf prune orchard apple tree. You want to choose apples that are in season in South Dakota in the summertime. You may need to check with a nursery to know what apples are growing in South Dakota in the summer. The apples listed here might work http://www.prairielawn.com/prairie..._C_apple.htm

QUESTION:

I have three fruit trees. Can I graft them or just grow them?

I have three fruit trees and some branches that are not as strong as others. I was thinking about just grafting them into some others and growing. But I don't know if this is what I should be doing.

ANSWER:

Grafting sounds like an option. The other thing to consider is the age of the trees. If they are old, they might not produce as well as new ones. Also, since the three trees are in your back yard, it would be helpful to know if you have them where they can be seen.

QUESTION:

How do I buy an apple tree?

If you are going to be using a lot of apples from your tree, then you would be wise to plant multiple apple trees. If you only want to plant one tree though, you could either do a graft or you can buy a dwarf apple tree.

QUESTION:

How do I care for a peach tree?

I live in Oregon and the climate is more like the Pacific Northwest, which I know isn't correct but I've been told that it's similar to it. I recently got a peach tree from a friend and I've been trying to figure out what it needs to thrive and what it needs to survive and thrive. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and/or tips on the things that I should know about? I'd really appreciate it.

QUESTION:

What's the best type of plant to grow?

What's the best type of plant to grow?

Answer - the best type of plant to grow depends on what you like and need. Do you need a small plant like a fern, or is a bush like a eucalyptus plant more suitable. You may want a big plant like a maple, or something in between.

When you are thinking about what to buy remember that plants have a habit of growing the best they can under the conditions you put them in. For example, a plant in water might be happier in a large pot or a smaller one. Or a plant in sun might be happier under a shady arbor or an exposed spot.

Plants also have a habit of growing best under the conditions they were meant to be. So, if you plant a bush, don't be surprised if it doesn't grow like a tree. Likewise, you may find that your favorite flower or plant grows better in a warmer climate than you are used to growing.

You can't know for sure until you have it, but if you are interested in getting a new plant, look at what you can find where you live. Then, if you like what you see, come back here to read more information and take the time to ask any questions.
