The Moon is a captivating subject. However, photos with the Moon alone are all very similar. Read about finding the right time, place, and method to shoot the Moon.

At first glance, it may seem that when shooting at night, an amazing camera and lens are required to make the image worth it. There are always exceptions and other things to consider. You can photograph a moonlit landscape in many ways. It makes sense to use a wider perspective, where the sky is the main object and the Moon and foreground silhouettes become additions to the scene.

This method certainly makes the lay-out easier and choosing a location less demanding. This means a bigger focal length. The longer, the better. The following image was taken with a focal length of mm, as opposed to the other shots in this article, which had a focal length between and mm. The Moon is a given, but what else would you like in your image?

In general, buildings with a distinctive silhouette reaching to the sky are ideal. When shooting shortly after sunset or, alternately, before sunrise, the sky remains blue with dark silhouettes emerging. On the other hand, you may want to shoot a photo in the middle of the night.

An alternative is to use the Moon to completely lighten the sky directly behind the subject:. A simpler option may be a city setting, where the buildings are lit up. Even so, assume you will have to combine several photos I would try to do this even when shooting the city on its own. The darker it is, the more you need to be familiar with the surroundings at daylight.

Otherwise, you may be waiting for the Moon to move to the right position, but it will stay hidden behind a hill many kilometers away, impossible to see in the dark. Use an allowance of hundreds of meters rather than single digits so that you can have enough space without trees available for adjustments.

Unfortunately, when photographing in landscape orientation and with high focal length mm and more , the air vibration is all too noticeable. It is better to use a shorter exposure time. With a longer exposure time the Moon will appear blurry. Requiring a short exposure becomes a problem when setting off to observe the Lunar Eclipse. For the next photo, I was by a small chapel, which I had to get much closer to than in the previous examples — about meters.

Instead, I photographed the Moon on its own a bit earlier and then added it into the photo with the chapel later, with its fuzzy version beneath it:. I was recently asked a question that caught me off guard: "Why, after doing it for more than half a century, do I still image the Moon? It is my niche in astronomy. After all, taking close-up photos of the Moon is not something many people do, and over the years I seem to have become good at it. The more I thought about it, the more I knew there had to be some underlying reasons for my loony It is true that NASA's spacecraft have imaged the Moon in orders of magnitude greater detail than I can achieve with my backyard telescope. From my earthly perspective, I can often achieve about a kilometer resolution on the Moon.

Normal lunar crater. Scottish-born Nasmyth was a leading entrepreneurial engineer of his day and the inventor of the steam hammer. Although not a professional astronomer, he teamed up with one, James Carpenter of the Royal Observatory, to co-author one of the most influential books of the time on lunar geology: The Moon: Considered as a Planet, a World, and a Satellite. In its pages, Nasmyth and Carpenter sum up three decades of research encompassing all that astronomers knew about the moon, believing that the craters on its surface were of volcanic origin, but that is a theory that later proved to be incorrect. They also attempted to answer some of the still-unanswered questions of the time: Could the moon support life? Did it have an atmosphere? How exactly did its craters and other features form? It was this last question in particular that interested Nasmyth.

The National looks at some of the most exciting missions scheduled forPhoto: Nasa. The Moon will continue to be a major focus in global space exploration efforts. Space agencies in others parts of the world also have lofty goals for the year ahead. Nasa hopes to launch the first mission under its Artemis programme , which aims to build a sustainable human presence on the Moon. South Korea plans to launch a lunar orbiter.
