How do I build a woodland garden?

The Woodland Garden Mix contains 25 native species of wildflower including familiar favourites such as bluebell and ramsons. Designed to include species that will thrive in woodland-type areas. A beautiful woodland patch is ideal for a small garden or a north east corner where it is hard to get things to grow well. These cheerful and tough flowers form an intrinsic part of a woodland ecosystem, offering a bouquet for insects when they need it most.

This mix can thrive in low light levels and flower early in the year to capture the sun's energy. Area coverage is square metres depending on how thickly sown. Flowers late May to early September. To prepare for sowing, clear the area of vegetation in advance and cultivate the top 5cm 2". There is no need to dig too deep as doing so would also bring potentially unwanted weed seed to the surface.

Rake over the area to create a fine tilth and sow the seeds lightly on the surface. Lightly rake or tread in the seed. Do not bury the seed too deep as it may hinder germination. Keep moist. 5 unusual native UK woodland plants for the garden

Consider making a path through your woodland garden to a potting shed or other destination. Use natural materials on the path so weeds and grass can't sprout. Hydrangeas will grow nicely in large containers, adding bright color to the shade. Photo by: Photo by Lynn Coulter. Be careful when using these tools; you may hit roots, stumps, rocks and other debris, so wear appropriate safety glasses and other protective gear. A boardwalk is a good choice if the ground stays marshy or wet. Stepping stones are another option, if you can find some that look natural, not out of place. Shop for native plants that grow in shade.

Create a woodland glade

In Charlotte, North Carolina, a self-taught gardener who watched a lot of gardening shows on television! Sifford, who runs his own aquarium business, bought the property 12 years ago. He took what was considered an impossible lot—hilly and filled with rotting railroad ties—and landscaped it into a dreamy woodland garden, complete with three ponds, all connected by streams, and punctuated with waterfalls. I would describe the style of my garden as predominately woodland, with a contemporary note coming from original art placed strategically throughout the garden.

The "woodland garden" evolved in the far reaches of country estates and was essentially the farthest bit from the house, requiring the minimum of effort and upkeep. Hartland Abbey, in Devon, is no exception: the more manicured areas are around the house, which sits in a clearing within a wooded valley.

The Dell Woodland Garden

When we came to Clonalis in the Dell Garden had become completely overgrown and was not on the list of things to do immediately! The garden always fascinated me and with Pyers and the children we spent time exploring it…we discovered where the paths had been and fought our way through to rediscover the bomb shelter which had been built by Denis O Conor Don inIn an 18th century gravestone was relocated to the garden. The Latin inscription on this stone translated by Douglas Hyde proved to be an epitaph for both The O Conors and people of Ireland at the height of the penal laws. This stone stands overlooking the garden to this day.

Woodland / Shade Gardens

A small, striking plants, it flowers the same time as the wood anemones, early daffodils and primroses. Its leaves are smooth with mint chocolate colourings and the flowers nod elegantly above in lily-shaped magenta pink. Its delicacy is sometimes its downfall with a harsh frost browning the edges of the flowers. However, the marbles leaves are still attractive well after flowering and they are well worth the gamble. King Solomon thought approvingly of this benefit and the name was bestowed, supposedly. Perfect in natural style plantings and informal edges under trees and shrubs.

Woodland Garden Mix Seeds

All-green gardens are becoming popular again as the centerpieces of monochromatic landscaping. The designs are appealing and restive, driven as they are by massed ferns, moss, leaves, bark, berries, rock and foliage combinations. They serve some practical purposes, too.

Forests have a way of capturing the imagination. If your favorite summer days are those spent hiking through the woods, a woodland garden may be for you. Woodland-themed gardens are rustic by nature, and they call for furniture that borders on primitive. A wooden bench makes a perfect place to sit in solitude and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. A wooden swing hung from a high-up tree bough adds a further layer of whimsy, though it may be difficult to have one put in around now.

Got shade?

Woodland Gardening Book

Woodland gardens invoke all our senses at once. The key to planting up a woodland garden is to get the layers right — trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs. Deciduous trees are a good choice because they allow for a wonderful display of spring bulbs and early perennials before the canopy leafs up. You will also have a ready supply of fallen leaves in autumn to make leaf mould. Gather up the leaves into bin bags, pierce the bags to ventilate them and leave them to compost. A year later, you should have a good supply of leaf mould, for mulching your garden borders.

This book is both a valuable reference and a practical how-to guide to hundreds of plant species suited for cultivation beneath a canopy of mature trees. Here is all the information needed to get started: design, plant selection, planting and maintenance. These principles can be applied anywhere in North America in any size garden, from large estate to a cramped city lot.
